CARSON CITY, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Winds gusting more than 50 miles per hour tore through the valley today.
"It's been an exciting afternoon," said Carson City resident Margaret Elliott.
In Elliott's neighborhood the wind damaged property.
"We looked out and his tree had gone down, so we came out and looked at it," she said.
Then they saw a fire across the street.
"We were just hanging out inside and then all of a sudden we look outside and there's flames on top of the roof," said Kendal Elliott, Margaret's grandaughter.
That's when Kendal says her grandma called 911.
"We didn't have phone service because the power was out so we used our cells," Margaret said.
There were more damaged utility poles on North Carson Street. A lane of traffic is closed as crews work to remove the broken poles and install new ones.
Despite the outage, the Elliotts say this weather is normal for Northern Nevada.
"This is pretty typical wind actually," Margaret said.
"It's definitely not abnormal," Kendal said. "It was pretty crazy for today because you don't wake up expecting a fire."
