RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - As a controversial court case from Reno carries on, a group of about 60 protesters gathered to make their voices heard. The rally's been in the works for weeks now, but organizers knew this case had to become part of their message.
“It seems like the government wants to even force abortions, force people to provide abortions and force abortions on people,” Living Waters Church Pastor Ric Fehr said.
On Tuesday Washoe County District Judge Egan Walker is set to continue hearing evidence about if a mentally impaired 32-year-old should carry on with her medically high risk pregnancy. News 4 is not naming her at request of the judge. Although there have been no court orders yet for a termination, and the judge hasn't even told us if that's an option. Lawyers for the woman's legal guardians say judge walker is acting outside his legal authority and wants to decide what should be done with the pregnancy. That's despite the fact her guardians want it carried to term.
“We have very very grave concerns about what that means and what kind of president that creates,” attorney Kim Guinasso said.
Most people in the crowd said they were deeply troubled by the court's actions.
“I think they are really overstepping their boundaries. As a parent I think we know what's best for our children,” pro-lifer Merrie Grant said.
The guardians’ attorneys for the woman's guardians are also asking the state Supreme Court to step in. A ruling on that is expected Monday or early Tuesday morning.
