RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - All major highways were back open Monday with just chain controls in some higher elevations. This after large portions of Interstate 80 were closed completely Sunday stranding several drivers for hours.
To avoid similar delays on the way back home, the National Weather Service says visitors to Reno should probably wait until Thursday or Friday to return since another snowfall might move Christmas evening around 6.
“We're looking for 10 to 15 inches near the crest again and some five to 10 into the Tahoe Basin, so that will cause difficulties coming over the pass,” Shane Snyder of NWS said.
If your guests are spending the week here, there's also a slight chance of a disturbance Sunday so Saturday would be the safer weekend travel day.
And just because the highways are clear, remember side streets may not be. Exits for example are still pretty slick and are expected to remain that way throughout the week. During News 4's forum at 11 this morning Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen said every holiday driver should be ready for the worst just in case..
“Keep your cell phone charger with you and be prepared for unexpected delays,” he said.
