RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com ) - Layoff notices will be going out to 80 Reno fire fighters. Reno's City Council made that decision today because of deconsolidation with the county. A city spokesperson says they will be department wide and based on standard layoffs procedures which consider things like seniority.

County commissioners say they would like to re-hire as many of those laid off employees as possible.

“I think we owe it to re-hire every last one of those people,” Commissioner Kitty Jung said.

The City Manager says the layoffs will be happening, but he wants to wait as long as possible to send out the pink slips.

I wish the article or Kitty provided more details. Is there a plan to rehire these people? Does this leave us with fire fighter coverage gaps? Does this lessen our emergency response time? Should i buy my own fire truck? I really hope each one of these men and women get taken care of proper. They put their lives on the line for the community and the community can't keep them employed. Why can't we appeal to the State or the Feds for emergency funds. I think going into fire season with 80 less firemen seems concerning, especially after the recent fires like the skyline fires and others.
