CARSON CITY, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - There's a new push to lower the cost of accessing public records in Nevada after a News 4 Fact Finder report exposed some people were asked to pay more than $20,000 for a few e-mails.
A new bill draft request was just filled at the legislative building aiming to cut down some of those high prices of public records. State Senator Tick Segerblom is behind it saying something needs to be done to defend this democratic right. This comes after he promised News 4 viewers in May he would pursue the issue.
Back then our Fact Finder Team discovered electronic records were often making the transparency process more expensive since agencies were sometimes charging thousands and thousands of dollars for staff time to access easy to find information on the computer.
This new bill draft request is similar to one Segerblom dealt with last session. And he seems to have mixed feelings about how it will fair this time around, but he hopes at least part of the proposal will get past.
There has been opposition in the past from some government agencies - particularly in Southern Nevada - who say the high prices are justified. It's likely they'll take the same position again. Of course News 4 will monitor how this all plays outs.
