RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - A Nevada state law could soon be changing after News 4 exposed a legal loophole which lets people get away with something that would be a crime in other states.
Back in May, News 4 told you about Eric Preimesberger who was beaten to death with a baseball bat.
Kristi is Eric's wife and the sister of his convicted killer. She testified she helped clean up the crime scene and hide Eric’s body - but Kristi walked away without criminal charges because of an old Nevada law exempting siblings from prosecution as accessories if they helped after the original crime happened.
After watching our investigation, Assemblywoman Teresa Benitez-Thompson filed a bill to change the law.
“After seeing someone not serve one day in jail after practicing in this awful crime, now we know we need to go in and fix this,” she said.
Her research shows this criminal code doesn't exist elsewhere and she's confident other lawmakers here will back her bill in the silver state to strike this section.
“When I talk to people about changing this law, I get a very good reception because I think it's fundamentally just wrong,” she said.
The law also protects other family relationships like grandparents, children and spouses. Bentiz-Thompson's bill aims to change all of those as well expect husband and wife because it is protected under federal code,
News 4 has also reached out to the sister involved in this story before. She has previously declined to comment about anything related to the case.
