SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — A man was killed in a fall while hiking in Santa Barbara County and a woman spent nearly 24 hours with two broken ankles before she was rescued.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Kelly Hoover says the couple in their 20s were found separately — one dead, one alive — by other hikers Monday along Cold Springs Trails in Montecito.

The two started hiking together Sunday about 4 p.m. and fell about 45 minutes later. The woman broke both ankles and a wrist and the man had a serious arm injury.

The man went seeking help and fell again about 20-to-30 feet down a rocky ledge. Another couple found his body Monday morning.

Shortly before 4 p.m., several hikers discovered the injured woman, who was airlifted to a hospital.

The couple's names were not released.
