SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Two Southern California mountain peaks are nameless no more.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports the summits on the Yucaipa Ridge in the eastern San Bernardino Mountains are now known as Wanat and Cuchillo peaks. Wanat is 9,324 feet high and Cuchillo is 8,868 feet.
The names are the result of an 18-month-long effort by Paul Melzer, who works for the Wildlands Conservancy in Oak Glen.
He worked with linguists who helped him choose Wanat, a Serrano word for mountain lions, which frequent the region.
Cuchillo, which means knife in Spanish, was chosen because its ridge line has sharp drop-offs on each side, resembling a knife's edge.©2014 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
