LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say two children are dead and their parents are hospitalized after an overnight fire gutted a bedroom at a northwest Las Vegas home.

Deputy Clark County Fire Chief Jon Klassen says police officers were turned back by flames before firefighters arrived a little after 1 a.m. Thursday at the single-story home on North Riley Street. That's near Durango Drive and Ann Road.

Klassen says the parents tried to fight the fire with a garden hose from outside a window until firefighters were able to get inside.

Officials say the children were a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl. Their names weren't immediately made public.

Clark County fire officials are investigating, but Las Vegas police say the fire appears to have been an accident.
