SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Four people in Santa Clara County died of hypothermia Thursday as the region was gripped by freezing temperatures overnight.

Santa Clara County Coroner's Office spokeswoman Rosie Dominguez confirmed the deaths and their cause Friday afternoon, but she provided no further information.

Dominguez referred questions to a county spokeswoman, who did not immediately return a phone call.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that three victims died in homeless encampments while a fourth person died in a garage.
