SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP) — Fire officials say they are investigating the cause of a fire at a pet boarding house on California's central coast that killed seven dogs.

Cal Fire captain Zach Nichols says the fire could have been much worse Monday morning at Thousand Hills Pet Resort in San Luis Obispo because there were 20 or 30 more kennels around the 10 that burned.

Owner Jack Gould said in a statement that employees notified firefighters immediately and the staff is deeply sorry about the loss of the animals.

Located near U.S. Highway 101 and San Luis Obispo's regional airport, the facility offers dog daycare, lodging, grooming and training.
