HESPERIA, Calif. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California is charging that administrators and teachers at a San Bernardino County high school are discriminating against gay students.
The ACLU sent a letter to the Hesperia Unified School District on Monday, demanding that district officials step in to end disrespectful remarks, censorship of gay student club activities, and other harassment of gay students by teachers and administrators at Sultana High School.
According to the 11-page letter, girls have been told they must wear dresses to the prom, the Gay Straight Alliance has been refused permission to show movies addressing gay issues, and administrators fired a gay teacher who mentored students after subjecting her to harassing interrogations.
Interim Superintendent David McLaughlin did not immediately return a phone call requesting a response.
