MENDOCINO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an abalone diver is missing and feared dead in rough waters off the Mendocino County coast.

Fire officials tell the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa that the 50-year-old San Francisco man ran into trouble while diving with three friends Sunday in Elk Harbor.

His friends administered CPR in standing water inside a cave, says Bob Matson, assistant chief for Elk volunteer fire.

Believing the man had died, they left him in the cave. Matson says it took about 30 minutes for the three to get up to the bluffs and call 911.

Rescue divers attempted to search the cave Sunday night but had to abandon the plan because of the rough water.

Abalone are mollusks found off the California coast. They are revered by seafood lovers.
