LOS ANGELES (AP) — Investigators have determined an aging pipe caused 500 gallons of sewage to spill along a popular San Luis Obispo bike path.

The San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department's Peter Hague said Monday the leak affected a roughly 2-foot-wide and 30-foot long strip along Bob Jones Bike Trail Sunday.

According to Hague, authorities were called out to investigate the leak at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday. By 5 p.m. the sewage had been sucked out and the faulty section of pipe repaired.

The sewage did not reach a nearby creek. The pipe is owned by Avila Beach-based San Miguelito Mutual Water Co.

Hague says the asphalt along the bike path was replaced Monday. He says there have been no reported public health concerns as a result of the leak.
