WASCO, Calif. (AP) — Detectives are investigating the death of an inmate following a fight at a state prison in the San Joaquin Valley.

Officials say inmate Brian Tansey was allegedly attacked after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday by two fellow inmates inside the reception center at Wasco State Prison in Wasco, north of Bakersfield.

Prison staff began life saving procedures on Tansey before he was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Tansey had been serving a 2-year, 8-month sentence for receiving stolen property since early Nov.

The alleged suspects have been identified as prison inmates Shawn Roundtree and Charles Dulyea.

Officials say Kern County prosecutors will investigate the incident as a homicide. The Office of the Inspector General Bureau of Independent Review also has been notified.
