CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have burned a mobile home in the Southern California desert because it was filled with explosive chemicals and materials for homemade bombs.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise says the home at the Sungate County Mobile Home Park in Cathedral City was set ablaze shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday. Authorities decided that it was safer to burn it than to try hauling away the materials.
Residents evacuated from nearby homes were allowed to return Saturday.
Police went to the park Tuesday after a woman said her brother was acting delusional and might be there.
Police say they found a pipe bomb, other materials and quantities of highly combustible potassium nitrate and aluminum powder.
They arrested 21-year-old Sean Clarke. He has pleaded not guilty to nine felony counts and remains jailed.
