LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities in Las Vegas have a homicide on their hands after learning that stab wounds killed a man in a burned home where rescuers battled heavy smoke and security bars to reach a screaming woman.

The Clark County coroner's office said Tuesday that 65-year-old Charles Ray Stewart died of stab wounds to the chest, not the late March 12 blaze at a small home in the West Las Vegas neighborhood.

Las Vegas fire spokesman Tim Szymanski (zim-ANN'-skee) had said investigators thought the blaze was sparked by careless smoking.

On Tuesday, he said they're not so sure.

Several police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after trying to remove bars from windows before cutting through a door to rescue the woman.

By the time firefighters reached Stewart, he was dead.
