SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A threat to a state official has led authorities to arrest a Santa Clara man and confiscate explosive materials and a loaded handgun.

Officer Sean Kennedy, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol's Protective Services Division, said Wednesday that 45-year-old Everett Basham was in jail on suspicion of threatening a public official and carrying a concealed firearm. He says explosives were discovered at the man's home.

He would not release the identity of the official, citing security concerns, nor describe the nature of the threat.

Kennedy says investigators found a loaded handgun in Basham's vehicle and explosive materials at his home. The Santa Clara County Sheriff's bomb squad blew up the unstable materials after Basham's arrest on Tuesday.

Kennedy says the threat was deemed "credible," leading to the arrest.
