SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Assembly has passed legislation that would require adult film actors to wear condoms during filming and be tested regularly, a bill that would expand a 2012 voter-approved mandate in Los Angeles to the entire state.

AB1576 by Democratic Assemblyman Isadore Hall of Compton advanced Tuesday on a 41-12 vote, the minimum number needed to move to the Senate.

Hall says his bill is a workplace safety measure to curb the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Safety regulators say rules already require condom use but are rarely enforced.

Adult film trade representatives say the bill would persuade their industry to flee California. Supporters dismiss that argument as an exaggeration.

Dozens of porn actors have opposed the bill, saying it undermines their medical privacy. They also have praised existing safety protocols.
