LAS VEGAS (AP) — The burned father of two children who perished in a house fire spoke by telephone from his hospital bed to family, friends and neighbors holding a candlelight vigil in front of his northwest Las Vegas home.

Anthony Flores said Thursday that he's thankful for the community support and believes his 4-year-old son, Cruz Flores, and 2-year-old daughter, Ella Flores, had a great life.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that Anthony Flores and his wife, Stephanie Parriera, remained hospitalized after they were hurt trying to reach the children in a burning bedroom a little after 1 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters say the couple tried to use a garden hose, and police officers were turned back by flames before firefighters could douse the fire and reach the children in the burned bedroom.
