WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has taken the rare step of endorsing the Democratic incumbent in one of California's most hotly contested congressional races.
The trade group overwhelmingly endorses Republican candidates, but this time it sided with Rep. Scott Peters, a freshman representing a San Diego-based district.
Thomas Donahue, the group's president and chief executive, says in a letter that Peters' support for pro-business issues helped him earn the endorsement. Donahue also told Peters the group would encourage the business community to vigorously support his candidacy.
The endorsement is a coup for Peters, who faces a strong challenge from Republican Carl DeMaio.
The district is almost evenly divided between Republicans, Democrats and independent voters. Peters' campaign says the endorsement demonstrates that he works across party lines to get results.
