SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man has been sentenced to 16 years to life in prison for stabbing his mother's friend to death with a pocket knife.

Saul Jose Salazar was sentenced Friday on one count of second-degree murder for stabbing 33-year-old Antonio Verdugo-Cabrera after a party at his mother's house.

Prosecutors say Salazar had been kicked out of the Santa Ana home on Oct. 3, 2010 after he became violent.

Salazar returned hours later while the party was under way and got into an argument with Verdugo-Cabrera.

Police said Salazar stabbed the victim three times in an upstairs bedroom.

Salazar's mother had had a restraining order against her son that expired two weeks before the murder.

A jury found Salazar guilty in 2012.
