SYLMAR, Calif. (AP) — A nurse in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times while on the job in a northern Los Angeles County hospital.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says 26-year-old Romero Carnalla of Los Angeles allegedly entered Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar just after 2 a.m. Sunday and bypassed a weapons screening area. He fled into the building, away from security and law enforcement officers.

As authorities searched the hospital for the suspect they heard a woman scream. They found the nurse stabbed an unknown number of times in the upper and lower torso.

Hospital spokesman Michael Wilson says the nurse is in critical condition at the Olive View.

Carnalla is in custody. A knife was recovered at the scene.
