MORRO BAY, Calif. (AP) — State regulators have nixed a plan to build a long-sought sewage treatment plan next to an existing one overlooking the Pacific in Morro Bay on California's central coast.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune (http://bit.ly/SnGu04) reports the Calfornia Coastal Commission voted unanimously Thursday to deny the project deemed too dangerous because the location is in a floodplain and tsunami hazard zone.
The denial was no surprise, as the two main entities behind the plant proposal — the Morro Bay City Council and the Cayucos Sanitary District — had both withdrawn support for the project leading up to the vote.
Morro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons said the vote was still necessary to kill the project and to allow the two groups to find a new inland location for a sewage treatment plant.
