MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California man has been sentenced to death for the shotgun killing of his ex-girlfriend while she was working at a San Francisco Bay-area bridge toll plaza.
A Contra Costa County judge on Friday sentenced 49-year-old Nathan Burris after jurors recommended the death penalty after finding Burris guilty of two counts of capital murder in November.
Burris was convicted of killing 51-year-old Deborah Ross in a toll booth at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in August 2009. He also was found guilty in the killing of Ross' friend, 58-year-old Ersie "Chuckie" Everette III, a Golden Gate Transit District bus driver who was visiting her.
Burris shot Ross and Everette because he thought they had become romantically involved after Ross ended their relationship.
Burris, who represented himself at his trial, told the judge on Friday he feels no remorse.
