DELANO, Calif. (AP) — Officials at a Central California prison say an inmate serving a life sentence is suspected of killing his cellmate.

Kern Valley State Prison officials said Friday that a 41-year-old inmate is being held as a suspect after his cellmate was found dead in their cell Thursday evening. The death is considered a homicide.

Both men were serving life sentences without the possibility of parole for first degree murder. The inmate was sentenced to prison from Fresno County in 1993. The victim was from Los Angeles County and was sent to prison in 2004.

Several fights at the same prison a week ago sent 10 inmates to the hospital for treatment of stab wounds.

The prison is located between Fresno and Bakersfield. It opened in 2005 and houses nearly 3,400 inmates.
