HOPEDALE, Ill. (AP) — A small central Illinois village is honoring a U.S. Marine killed during a fighter jet crash.

Thirty-two-year-old Capt. Reid Nannen of Hopedale died March 1 when his jet crashed during a training exercise in Nevada, where he was a student at the U.S. Navy's "Top Gun" school.

More than 100 volunteers turned out in the Tazewell County town of about 850 this week to plant more than 2,300 flags in Nannen's honor before a weekend funeral service.

Visitation is Friday at Olympia High School in Stanford, from which Nannen graduated in 2000. His funeral is Saturday at Eastview Christian Church in Normal.

Nannen is survived by a wife and four children.

He was assigned to a Marine Corps Air Station in Japan, and was on temporary duty at flight school.
