SANTA MARIA, Calif. (AP) — Santa Barbara County sheriff's deputies say they broke up a cockfight and recovered nearly 20 roosters.

A sheriff's statement released Monday says deputies responded to a report of a large gathering near Santa Maria Airport on Sunday.

The deputies found about 20 cars and heard the sound of roosters. Some two dozen people ran away as they arrived, and deputies stopped and detained four or them. The four men, all from Santa Barbara County and ranging in ages from 32 to 85, were cited for possession of fighting birds and trespassing.

Deputies and animal control officers found 19 roosters along with metal leg spurs and other fighting paraphernalia. Two wounded birds had to be euthanized.

The case was handed over to prosecutors, who will decide on further charges.
