CORCORAN, Calif. (AP) — A guard at California State Prison-Corcoran is recovering after corrections officials say he was attacked by an inmate with a homemade weapon.

A spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says a sergeant at the facility suffered a slash on the ear, scratches and abrasions when inmate Tavis Ray Thompson hit him several times Saturday with a weapon made from a sharpened piece of aluminum attached to cardboard.

The sergeant — who has not been named — was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Two other officers who responded to help the sergeant suffered minor injuries.

Officials say the 36-year-old Thompson was admitted to Corcoran in 2003 from Imperial County, where he was serving 55-years-to-life for assault with a deadly weapon, assault by a life prisoner and possession of a weapon by a prisoner.

He also has convictions for carjacking, robbery and assault.
