ESCONDIDO, Calif. (AP) — San Diego County has given the stink eye to the owner of a defunct country club for spreading smelly chicken manure on the golf course.

U-T San Diego says the county's Air Pollution Control District issued a public nuisance citation Monday. The owner of the Escondido Country Club could face fines of $10,000 a day. The egg ranch that supplied the manure also was cited.

Agency Director Bob Kard says the manure was deposited on some abandoned fairways over the past two weeks. Residents and inspectors say the smell was — well, breath-taking.

Ronald Richards, an attorney for club owner Stuck in the Rough LLC, says the company used a legal product and had it removed once complaints surfaced.
