STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — Police in Stockton say three people were wounded when 40 to 50 gunshots rang out in a daytime shooting in a residential neighborhood.

Witnesses tell the Record of Stockton the shooting around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday was preceded by a fistfight involving several men in the street.

Two of the victims, a 25-year-old woman and 36-year-old man, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but were listed in stable condition at a hospital in the evening.

Police believe they were sitting in a car when they were shot.

The third victim — a 40-year-old man — was struck in the eye by broken glass.

A motive for the shooting was not known.
