DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a 75-year-old San Diego County man was struck and killed by a train while trying to protect his dog.

Sheriff's Sgt. Anthony O'Boyle tells U-T San Diego the collision happened Friday afternoon while the man was walking the yellow Labrador retriever off leash on the coastal bluff in Del Mar.

Witnesses say the train engineer sounded the horn, apparently startling the dog, which moved toward the track. O'Boyle says the man was struck as he leaned over the tracks to grab the dog.

The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dog was not hurt. It was turned over to the victim's brother-in-law.
