LOS ANGELES (AP) — A chase of a suspected drunken driver has ended with Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies killing the driver and injuring his passenger.

The Sheriff's Department says two deputies saw a car driving recklessly around 10 p.m. Tuesday in Compton and tried to stop it. A brief, slow-speed chase ended when the vehicle hit a parked car.

The deputies left their patrol car and approached the stopped car.

Authorities say the driver then tried to hit one deputy with the car, prompting the deputy to open fire. The other deputy opened fire after he allegedly saw the driver get a handgun.

The driver died at the scene and a loaded handgun was seized.

The injured passenger was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Their names haven't been released.
