ELKO, Nev. (AP) — The state attorney general's office says the Elko County Commission violated Nevada's Open Meeting Law with improper notice of an agenda item last fall.
Senior deputy attorney general George Taylor is recommending the panel change the way it does business to avoid surprises at future meetings.
Acting on a complaint by Elko's KELK Radio, Taylor concluded the commissioners failed to adequately describe the information they intended to present at a public meeting Oct. 23 regarding law enforcement at the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
BLM Elko District Manager Jill Silvey said she was caught off guard when Commissioner Grant Gerber invited a local resident to approach the panel with complaints about potential misconduct by agency officers. She says she had no notice and wasn't prepared to address those concerns.
