ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Officials in Elko hope to persuade more out-of state visitors to fly into their small airport and spend their vacations in its casinos.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the City Council approved an extension with Reno-based marketing firm Younger Agency on Tuesday in hopes of growing airport traffic.

The Elko Regional Airport has budgeted $27,000 for a campaign that includes an upgraded website, promotional airfares and social media marketing on Twitter and Facebook.

Airport Director Mark Gibbs says he hopes the efforts persuade Skywest Airlines to continue its service to the city, which has a population of 18,000. Skywest is the only commercial carrier at the airport.

SkyWest spokesman Wes Horrocks says the airline periodically reviews the performance of its airports, and plans to keep operating in Elko.
