LAS VEGAS (AP) — John Entsminger has been named general manager of the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

Clark County commissioners acting as the Water District board approved the appointment Tuesday. Entsminger replaces Pat Mulroy, who is retiring in early February.

His appointment is a precursor to an upcoming vote later this month on a new general manager for the Southern Nevada Water Authority, which oversees water supplies in Nevada's populated region.

Mulroy has been the regional top water officials for more than two decades.

The water authority is governed by a separate board made up of county commissioners and city council members from Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City.
