SAN DIEGO (AP) — Officials say a dean at the University of California, San Diego who was about to start a new position as a chief executive at the University of Southern California has died while on vacation in Africa.
Debra Kain, spokeswoman for UC San Diego Health Sciences where McAfee had served as dean of clinical affairs, said in a statement Sunday that the 58-year-old McAfee died while vacationing in Tanzania. She gave no further details on the accident, it timing or the cause of death.
McAfee had come to UC San Diego in 2002 from UC San Francisco to serve as physician in chief.
On Tuesday he was to have begun as CEO of the newly formed Keck Medicine of USC Medical Foundation.
