LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former Pomona College professor is suing the school, claiming she was refused tenure and fired because she is Hispanic and a woman.
Alma Martinez filed the discrimination and wrongful termination suit on Tuesday in Los Angeles.
Martinez was an assistant professor of theater. She claims that in January, she was improperly refused a promotion to associate professor — which would have granted her tenure — and dismissed. Her last day was June 30.
The suit says the theater department had recommended the promotion and that Martinez met the tenure requirements of "intellectual leadership, professional achievement and effective service." Martinez wants to be rehired with tenure and seeks unspecified damages.
Messages left for a Pomona College spokeswoman seeking comment weren't immediately returned.
