NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say two fishermen and a dog were rescued from a burning boat off Orange County.

Sheriff's Harbor Patrol officials say the men called for help Wednesday afternoon after their 24-foot powerboat caught fire and sent up a huge plume of smoke.

Before a sheriff's crew could arrive, the occupants of the boat were rescued by a passing vessel about three miles off the coast in Crystal Cove. No injuries were reported.

Lt. Jeff Hallock tells the Orange County Register that harbor patrol officers doused the blaze, but the boat was a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The newspaper says smoke from the fire was visible across much of the nearby coast.
