FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) — Police in Northern California have shot and killed a man who brandished a knife after he apparently stabbed a woman and toddler.

Folsom police Officer Andrew Bates said the confrontation occurred outside an apartment building Thursday afternoon.

The Sacramento Bee reports an officer responding to calls about a stabbing was confronted by a man in his 20s who was armed with a large knife. The officer shot the man, who died after being taken to the hospital.

The man's name and his relationship to the stabbing victims were not immediately released. The mother and toddler were also taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries was not known.
