LAS VEGAS (AP) — A former NHL player was sentenced in Las Vegas to four to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl over a four-year period.

The girl's relatives sobbed as Michael McBain apologized Wednesday and said he was willing to accept any sentence the judge imposed.

The judge gave McBain a stiffer sentence than state officials recommended. He noted that the assaults took place over a long period.

The 36-year-old McBain played for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning from 1997 to 1999. He played two seasons in the United Kingdom before signing with the minor league Las Vegas Wranglers.

McBain is from British Columbia. He pleaded guilty in September to reduced felony charges of attempted sexual assault and attempted lewdness with a minor under 14.
