CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Funeral services are underway for a San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit officer who was shot and killed by a fellow officer during an apartment search.

Colleagues carried the flag-draped coffin of BART police Sgt. Tom Smith up the steps of the Neighborhood Church of Castro Valley on Wednesday as other officers in while gloves saluted.

The 23-year veteran was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the history of the transit agency.

The 42-year-old Smith died on Jan. 21 after being shot by fellow BART officer Michael Maes. He and his family were expected to attend the funeral.

An investigation is ongoing to determine whether Maes' weapon discharged accidentally or if he mistook Smith for someone else.
