SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Republican minority in the Legislature reacted favorably to Gov. Jerry Brown's live-within-our-means message in his State of the State address.
Sen. Jim Nielsen of Gerber says the governor "is speaking Republican language, embracing long-held Republican principles."
Democratic Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento said Democrats made difficult budget cuts in recent years and the governor is right to focus on a rainy day fund and paying down debt. He said the state will "invest in the appropriate ways" if the economy keeps growing.
Democrats won supermajorities in both houses last November, allowing them to pass tax increases without Republican support, if they choose.
