LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 49-year-old ex-convict has taken a plea deal that avoids trial and is expected to get him at least 40 years in prison in the abduction and rape of a 13-year-old Las Vegas schoolgirl at knifepoint last August.

Richard Martin Schlacta pleaded guilty Thursday to kidnapping and sexual assault of a minor charges, and prosecutor James Sweetin said Friday he'll seek consecutive terms of 35 years and five years to life at sentencing May 1.

Defense attorney Rich Tanasi didn't immediately respond to messages.

Schlacta is jailed in isolation on $1 million bail since shortly after his arrest.

The girl testified in November that Schlacta grabbed her at a school bus stop, threatened her with a box cutter and attacked her before she escaped and flagged down a passing motorist.
