HAWTHORNE, Calif. (AP) — Dozens of families can return to their Los Angeles-area homes, two weeks after they were forced to evacuate when a well gushed methane gas and water.
The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/16A9lhP ) says the 37 Hawthorne families were allowed to return Wednesday.
They were sent to hotels on Sept. 12 when a disused water well that was being capped began seeping naturally occurring methane and pouring out thousands of gallons of water.
Specialists were called in to plug the well and stop the leak, although it took several tries. The well owner, Golden State Water Co., says crews will need another week to finish capping the well.
