LOS ANGELES (AP) — The head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is stepping down after three years.

Mayor Eric Garcetti's office announced Thursday that General Manager Ron Nichols would leave the DWP at the end of the month.

City News Service says Nichols wrote in a letter to city leaders that he is leaving for "personal reasons."

Nichols says he wanted to stay on until the new mayor had completed his transition into office.

Garcetti thanked Nichols and said his administration would continue to reform the DWP to cut costs, improve customer service and increase transparency.

There is no immediate word who might replace Nichols.
