LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Southern Nevada Health District says the number of flu-related deaths in the Las Vegas area is up to 18.

District spokeswoman Jennifer Sizemore said Monday that the death of one child under age 4 is being blamed on this year's flu.

Five adults ages 25 to 49, five people ages 50 to 64, and seven adults over age 65 have died.

Sizemore says flu season generally peaks in February, and it's not too late to get a flu shot.

KXNT Radio reports there have been more than 440 cases of flu reported in the Las Vegas area since October, including 200 that required hospitalization.

The predominant flu strain this year is H1N1. That's the strain that killed more than 150,000 people worldwide in 2009.
