RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A federal bankruptcy judge may soon rule on whether the city of San Bernardino is eligible for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.
The San Bernardino County Sun reports (http://bit.ly/19Zb6ND) that Judge Meredith Jury scheduled a hearing Wednesday in Riverside to determine whether the cash-strapped city meets the requirements of the bankruptcy protection it sought last year.
The paper says Jury could rule Wednesday or might wait to make a decision.
City Attorney James Penman says he doesn't believe there's any doubt that San Bernardino meets the qualifications of Chapter 9.
The California Public Employees' Retirement System is the only creditor that has objected to the city's bankruptcy filing. The pension system says the city ignored years of warnings about an impending financial crisis and sought bankruptcy as a convenience.
