LOS ANGELES (AP) — A computer thief may have stolen Social Security numbers and other personal information on nearly 169,000 Los Angeles County medical patients.

County officials say computer equipment containing the records was stolen last month from the Torrance office of Sutherland Healthcare Solutions. The company provides billing services to the county Department of Health Services.

The computers contained names, Social Security numbers, billing data and possibly birthdates, addresses and diagnoses of patients at county medical facilities.

Sutherland has begun notifying patients that their information may have been compromised and will provide them with free credit monitoring.

The district attorney's office and Torrance police are investigating the break-in.
