LOS ANGELES (AP) — Autopsy information about the Los Angeles police shooting of an unarmed black man is being withheld until investigators can finish interviewing witnesses.
Police Chief Charlie Beck told the Police Commission on Tuesday that detectives asked the coroner's office to withhold details about the death of Ezell Ford to avoid influencing witness statements.
The 25-year-old man was shot Aug. 11 in South Los Angeles. Police say two gang officers tried to stop Ford on the street and he was shot after trying to grab an officer's gun during a struggle.
Family members have said Ford was mentally ill and at least one person has said he didn't resist officers.
A community forum on the shooting is planned for Tuesday night featuring LAPD commanders and Police Commission officials.
